What is the School of Choice program?

Under the schools-of-choice program, parents can send their children to a public school outside of their home district, provided there is room in the choice district and that district approves the transfer. In Shiawassee County, there is cooperation between districts that allows students their choice of virtually any school in the county.

How does it work?

Parents must apply to the district and provide proof of residency. If there is available space in the district the student would be permitted to attend providing there has been no suspension or expulsion of the student from another district. There is no tuition to pay. Because schools throughout Shiawassee County mutually endorse schools of choice, state funds are transferred to the Corunna program for students who transfer from anywhere in the county.

When can I apply?

You can apply at any time for schools of choice. Students will only be accepted at the beginning of a school year or at semester break.

How do I apply?

Pick up an application form at the Superintendent's office at 124 North Shiawassee St. Corunna or download an application here.

What if there are too many applicants?

If there are too many applicants for the available space, there will be a lottery drawing. Preference will be given to students with a sibling already attending the district.

When will I be notified?

You will be notified a few weeks prior to the beginning of the school year or semester break about the status of your application.

Will all my children be accepted?

There may be an instance where one sibling is accepted and another not, depending on the available class space in the grade level your child will be attending.

Is transportation provided?

Students may be picked up at the nearest Corunna Public Schools pick up point. Buses will not cross over district lines to pick up Schools of Choice students.
