EARL LANCASTER -
A true pioneer of Corunna athletics and education, Earl Lancaster laid the foundation for much of what defines Corunna High School today — its athletic pride, competitive excellence, and even its very identity as the Cavaliers. Hired in 1936 and becoming Superintendent of Corunna Schools in 1937, Lancaster’s leadership extended far beyond the classroom and into nearly every facet of the school’s athletic tradition.
As Head Football Coach, Lancaster compiled an extraordinary 45-7-4 record and 6 league titles over seven seasons, establishing Corunna as a small-school powerhouse in Michigan high school football. His teams posted three undefeated seasons, including the legendary 1947 and 1948 squads, with the 1947 team earning recognition as State Champions — a team and accomplishment already honored in the Corunna Athletic Hall of Fame.
Lancaster’s coaching influence didn’t stop on the gridiron. He also led Corunna’s programs in basketball, baseball, and track, guiding multiple teams to championships and elevating the school’s athletic profile statewide. During his tenure as head basketball coach from1945–1949 his teams captured five league titles and three district championships with a record of 89-20. In addition, his track teams won league championships in 1947,1948 & 1949, demonstrating his remarkable versatility and coaching acumen across sports.
Beyond his coaching success, Lancaster left an indelible cultural mark on Corunna. Drawing inspiration from the University of Virginia Cavaliers, and with the suggestion of Coach Harold Balmer, Lancaster officially gave Corunna its “Cavaliers” nickname, establishing an identity that still proudly defines the school today. He also led the change of the school’s colors from orange and black to gold and black, unifying Corunna’s teams under a bold and timeless look.
A devoted community leader, Lancaster even volunteered his time to coach city league softball, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to student and community athletics.
Earl Lancaster’s legacy is truly foundational — as a visionary educator, championship coach, and the architect of Corunna’s athletic identity. His enduring influence continues to shape the spirit and pride of Corunna generations later, making his place in the Corunna Athletic Hall of Fame both fitting and everlasting.

Reading at The Nick

🚨 Michigan still does not have a finalized K-12 budget. Without one, schools like ours risk missing critical funding this fall—resources we count on for teachers, buses, programs, and school safety.

I’ve shared more details in my recent posts. Please take a moment to read them and see why timely, protected school funding is so important for our students.

Cavaliers Bringing Art to the Community 🎨

This fall, our Corunna art students will be teaming up with Supercone for an exciting community mural project! Together, our advanced high school art students and middle school buddies will transform Supercone’s fence and outdoor tables into colorful works of art.

Supercone is generously providing all the paint, and our students will bring their own brushes and creativity. Designs will be developed in class, with high school students sketching outlines and middle schoolers adding their ideas to the final plan. On mural day, teams of students will work side by side to paint their section of the fence or table, creating a vibrant display that showcases both talent and teamwork.

We are especially proud that this project has been designed to include all students, with aides and support staff ensuring every child has the opportunity to participate. This collaboration is not only a wonderful learning experience but also a chance to strengthen the bond between our schools and local businesses.

It’s a true win-win: students get to share their creativity with the community, and Corunna gains another reason to be proud of its Cavaliers!
