August Employee of the Month Honored The Summer Custodial/Maintenance Team has been named August Employee of the Month. The team was honored during the August 21 Board of Education meeting held at Corunna High School. August Volunteer of the Month Honored Dave Brown has been named August Volunteer of the Month. Dave retired as a teacher at Corunna High School in May of 2005, after thirty-six years as a teacher. Dave said, “I volunteer because it gives me a chance to work with young children, which I have always enjoyed, ever since I started teaching.” Dave has volunteered with Odyssey of the Mind and with CHS cross country for many years. Dave said, “Three words that describe a true Cavalier are hardworking, dedicated, and honest.” In his spare time, Dave enjoys caring for his grandchildren. His family includes wife Bonnie, son Nathan, daughters Elizabeth and Kayla, and eight grandchildren.

Remembering and Honoring the Past With the successful passing of a bond in May of 2021, Corunna Public Schools began the process and journey to close Nellie Reed Elementary in Vernon and move students to Elsa Meyer Elementary in Corunna where six classrooms were newly constructed onto the existing building. The new classrooms will be used for the first time with the start of school on August 24. Nellie Reed School was constructed in 1898 Vernon High School. An addition was built in 1931 and in 1955, the west wing was built. In the 1940s the high school was discontinued and only housed K-8th grades and then was reduced again to house the 6th grade in 1961. Vernon residents merged with the Corunna School District in 1962, when the building was renamed Nellie Reed Elementary. In 1965, the building then became a K-5 school. Prior to closing this June, the school housed begindergarten and kindergarten students. The Shiawassee Regional Education District (SRESD) purchased Nellie Reed Elementary in April of 2023 to house county Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes. The sale was bittersweet for the Family of Nellie Reed who had taught 44 years, with 41 of those years, at the Vernon school. The school was dedicated and named in Nellie Reed’s honor in 1965. Recently, during the transition sentimental items were brought to the Corunna Public Schools’ Superintendent John Fattal. Monica Wagner, granddaughter of Nellie Reed was contacted, and the items are now with Nellie Reed’s family. The keepsakes included a flag that was flown over the US Capital on September 14, 2005, at the request of Honorable Dave Camp, Member of Congress, in honor of Nellie Reed and two pictures of Ms. Reed that once hung in the building. The SRESD is working on plans to continue the legacy of Nellie Reed by honoring the former educator in the near future. POSITION: Varsity Head Softball Coach JOB DESCRIPTION: The head softball coach will help student athletes to realize their potential through the provision of instruction, leadership, and encouragement. The coach will work to promote fair play, mentor athletes, and work with community and families. The softball coach will be expected to have regular and reliable attendance. JOB / DISTRICT / COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS: Our district lives our mission statement of preparing an unprecedented number of students to be college and/or career ready on a daily basis. Our district is known for offering quality education in a small-town environment with the amenities of a larger community (our district buildings are five minutes away from Applebee’s, Culver’s, Meijer, Walmart, etc.). Our county’s cost of living is incredibly low. We are a class “B” school (around 130 students per grade level) with a reputation for higher standards. We have the only inclusive preschool in the county. Our school is the community “hub” and Homecoming is still a big deal in our small town, which is the county seat. Our community is incredibly supportive of our district as well; our constituents passed a nearly $17 million bond in 2015 to upgrade our buildings and two more bonds in 2021, ($7 million). We have high-achieving athletic teams, and award-winning extra-curricular programs. We earned a $123,000 Michigan State Police competitive grant to upgrade security features in our buildings. We were the first district in the state to have an on-site health clinic for employees, (no copay for visits or prescriptions). QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated past ability to motivate and work with student/athletes. Experience in the sport of application is preferred. Possibly some athletic training experience or appropriate first aid. Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions: Requires the ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods. Occasionally requires the ability to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials. Occasionally requires the ability to stoop, bend and reach. Must be able to work in noisy and crowded environments.
