Project RED-Rural Education Day Students from Corunna’s Elsa Meyer Elementary had an opportunity to visit the Shiawassee County Fair Grounds to learn about agriculture and farming. Project RED (Rural Education Day), saw students rotate through stations, ranging from livestock to agriculture. The event is a great opportunity for students to learn first-hand about agriculture from those who live it every day.

September Volunteer of the Month-Joy Welty Joy Welty has been named the September Volunteer of the Month. Joy has been a member of the Corunna Education Foundation for many years and is a past president. Her late husband, Alan, and Joy have supported the Foundation’s work through generous donations of money to assist teachers and students of the Corunna Public Schools. “I believe it is important to support your community’s schools and the education of its young citizens. My husband was on the Board of Education, and I wish to continue that legacy,” said Joy. Joy said, “I think I started my volunteer work baking cookies for some elementary project. I continued that by baking cookies for each male swimmer who set a new school record and on and on.” Joy said, “The memories that I will always have from my time volunteering in Corunna are the smiles, the willingness of people to help, and the special memory when I went to an organizational meeting for a committee to support the bond issue for the high school to be built. One man looked at me and said, “We have never had women on this committee.” “A few words that I would use to describe a true Cavalier are, kind, community thinking, and willing to help,” said Joy. Joy’s hobbies include reading, being outside, and baking. Joy and her late husband, Alan, had four children together, Kurt, Kris, Beth, and the late Kyle Welty.
