Helping Your Teens Stay Focused While Driving In April, traffic safety advocates across the country will join to promote National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, stressing the importance of drivers keeping their eyes on the road, their hands on the wheel, and their minds on the drive. According to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, crashes are the leading cause of death among people aged 15-20. Teen drivers’ inexperience behind the wheel makes them more susceptible to distractions. Talking or texting on the phone takes a teen’s focus off the task of driving and significantly reduces their ability to react to a roadway hazard, an incident, or inclement weather. Taking eyes off the road even for five seconds could cost a life. Eyes on the Road. Hands on the Wheel. Mind on the Drive. All the time.

Corunna High School's FIRST Robotics competition team, Team FridgeBot, is headed to Michigan State Championships in Saginaw at the SVSU campus. They will be competing with 162 other teams from around the state. Many of these teams are larger in size and have much larger budgets than we do, but Team FridgeBot ranked 19th in the state out of 459 high school FRC teams. This places them nicely headed into the toughest state level high school robotics competition in the world. Last week Team FridgeBot attended the Jackson District event and made it into the semifinals. After an amazing run, the mighty little team led the pack and was the number one alliance captain. Unfortunately an alliance partner's robot was damaged during a climb and affected the score in finals. In the game the goal is to pick up and put balls into either a high goal or a low goal. Points are awarded based on 2 points in the high goal or 1 point in the low goal. Ranking Points however are based on completion of various tasks including 20 balls into a goal no matter which one. Ranking points get you into finals, total points win the game. Another way to gain points and ranking points is to climb your robot up a set of four monkey bars and each higher bar gets the team more points in return. After enough points have been earned climbing another ranking point is bestowed. The monkey bars are wide enough for two robots to be on them side by side. Team FridgeBot and its alliance partners managed to get all three robots hooked and supported by the top bar in the final second of a match. This formed the first Triple Climb in Michigan and only the third time it happened in the world to that point. Of course I cannot say enough about our supporters. Businesses in the area have given the team so much including the tables we work on, the lathes and mills we machine on, the computers our kids use to program and design with, and even the tires our trailer rolls on. Without YOU we could not do what we do and give the kids amazing experiences in design and engineering. Where else can you go where hundreds of people stand and cheer for a robot your kids designed and built with their own hands? Building a robot and attending competitions is expensive, but the results are worth it. Robotics kids leave with skills like Automation Programming, CAD and tool path generation, CAN network communications, Aluminum TIG welding, Media presentation skills and more. We have made improvements on the robot over the season including an active ball grabber, a high goal shooting mechanism, and now an active ball targeting system using cameras. These were not designed into the robot initially but came as a result of observations during the competition events. It also came about because of the amazing hard work and dedication of our team members. We are looking forward to going head to head starting Thursday and winding up this Saturday. April Employee of the Month-Shari Judd Shari Judd is a first grade teacher at Elsa Meyer Elementary. She was hired in August 1999. “Over the past twenty-three years as a teacher at Corunna Public Schools and the three years prior as a teacher with Norfolk Public Schools, I have thoroughly enjoyed every day of every year. To me, it is not a job, but my passion to work with and educate children,” said Shari. “Something that you may surprise you about me is that my mother and grandfather were both teachers way back when, and I remember thinking that I would never follow in their footsteps because of all the extra time and hard work they put in every day. Well……twenty-three years later,” said Shari. Shari said, “My favorite best day(s) was the adoption of both Shelby and Shane from Bolivia when they were infants, and seeing the proud look on both my mother and grandfather’s faces when I became a teacher.” “I have three things on my bucket list: traveling and spending time with good friends, traveling back to Bolivia, and possibly meeting someone special to spend the rest of my life with,” said Shari. Shari said, “A memory that I will always carry with me is being interviewed by Superintendent John Smith plus the continual warmth, friendship, and support I feel every day I walk through the door for the past twenty-three years.” “There is not just one thing that separates Corunna from other districts, but rather a combination of things such as how much we care for our children and their families and the support we show each other throughout the 365-day year,” said Shari. Shari said, “The person that most positively influenced me was my Grandmother Powell. This woman was amazing! She never said a cross word to anyone, could always find something good in everyone, opened her home to people during hard times when they could not afford a place of their own to live, and ears that would listen to problems, had sound advice to give, and love that never ended no matter what you did.” In her spare time Shari enjoys reading, having pets, meeting new people, and traveling.
